Why does my car battery die in summer, not winter?

Heat accelerates internal corrosion and evaporates the electrolyte inside a lead acid or AGM battery, which is what actually damages it. Cold weather does not cause the damage, it just makes an already weakened battery fail to deliver enough current, which is why failures often show up on the first cold morning after a hot summer.

Can extreme heat permanently damage a car battery?

Yes. Repeated exposure to under bonnet temperatures above 50°C to 60°C, common in Australian summer, permanently shortens a lead acid or AGM battery's usable life, even if it still appears to work normally in mild weather.

How long should a car battery last in Australian heat?

A standard lead acid battery typically lasts 2 to 3 years in hot Australian conditions, and AGM slightly longer at 3 to 4 years, both shorter than their rated life in milder climates.

Does parking in the shade actually help my battery?

Yes. Reducing under bonnet temperature, even by a few degrees, slows the chemical ageing process inside the battery. It will not prevent failure entirely but it meaningfully extends the life of a lead acid or AGM battery.

Are sodium ion batteries better for Australian heat than lithium?

Sodium ion and lithium both outperform lead acid and AGM in heat tolerance, but sodium ion has a wider safe operating temperature range and a lower thermal runaway risk than lithium chemistries, making it well suited to the extremes of Australian summer.
